Humorous Service With Funny Sermon Illustrations

By Andrea Davidson

Pastors are able to keep their congregation attentive by using funny sermon illustrations. They are catchy and will place your scripture in the context you wish to dwell that day. There is no restriction on where they may be used. It is possible to use them at the beginning, in between or at the end. Experts in speech delivery insist that illustrating a homily makes it memorable.

They come in different categories to cover for the needs of each group of faithful. Some are perfect for children, adults, elderly, mothers, fathers, etc. Others can be used across generations and still have the expected impact. It is important for pastors to ensure that they deliver the right illustration to the right people and at the right time. Some are perfect for Christmas while others are fit for Easter.

The topics handled vary and determine how effective it will be. For instance, a story is told about a man who found his son sited in front of the house, with his head hoisted using his hands. He thought to himself what could be wrong with his son before asking. The son looked at him, and in a low tone told him that he too was fed up with his wife. This is an illustration that would fit a marriage scenario.

Another story is told of a man who only attended church once a year during Christmas. The pastor would stand by the door and welcome the faithful telling them to join the army of the Lord. When his turn came, the pastor enquired why he only appeared at the church once a year. The man said that he was an ardent follower but was working for the secret service in the army of the lord and that is why the pastor could not see him often.

Many people are used to chorus answers in a mechanical manner without listening to what the pastor has asked. The normal response to, The Lord Be With You, as used by a pastor was, And Also With You. This time, the sound system developed a problem prompting the pastor to say, There Is A Problem With The Microphone. The congregation in its normal response went ahead to reply, And Also With You.

There are important days in the life of a religious man. They are baptism, wedding and burial. The funny part is that on the first day, people will throw water. On his wedding day, they will throw grains of rice. By the time he is dying, they are fed up and can only throw dust.

If you thought preaching was tiresome, try listening to a boring homily. After the Christmas festivities were over, the wife to a pastor told him that she was too tired. The husband could not understand considering that it was him who had to deliver the homily. The wife protested, I had to sit through five boring sermons in two days.

Funny sermon illustrations will make homilies memorable and practical. Faithful can easily follow the flow during the session and have something to discuss after church. After all, the same verse can be given different meanings when the approach is altered through an illustration.
